Compared with alternatives

Raster exists because no library we found meets its design goals together: light, SVG, and not based on d3. This page is the evidence, and a guide to picking something else if raster doesn’t fit.

Sizes are min+gzip from npm view and bundlephobia, checked in September 2026. They change often, so treat them as rough.

Library Size Notes
Recharts 3.10 151 KB Bundles d3 through victory-vendor, and depends on Redux.
visx Varies d3 through @visx/vendor. Primitives only: you build each chart yourself.
Nivo 96 KB Uses d3-shape and d3-scale.
MUI X Charts 124 KB d3 through a vendor package. Needs @mui/material and Emotion.
Victory 108 KB d3 through victory-vendor.
Observable Plot 128 KB All of d3, and not React.
Library Size Notes
Chart.js — Renders to canvas, not SVG.
AG Charts Community 411 KB Canvas.
ECharts 368 KB Not React. SVG renderer available.
Highcharts — Commercial licence.

Raster’s charts are about 2.4–6.5 KB min+gzip each, including the shared accessibility layer, render SVG, use no d3 and have no runtime dependencies. That’s the gap it fills.

It also does less. There’s no zooming, brushing, animation API, or large chart catalogue. If you need those, one of the libraries above is the better choice.

Accessibility is table stakes, not raster’s differentiator. AG Charts Community and MUI X Charts both ship keyboard navigation and screen-reader support out of the box. Raster aims to match them (SVG marks with accessible names, a “Show data table” disclosure, arrow-key navigation, tooltips on focus), not to claim it’s uniquely accessible.
